Here at My Nametags, we’ve been creating labels for families around the globe for more than 20 years. The world has changed drastically, so we were curious to see how parenting styles have changed compared to earlier generations.
To understand more, we polled more than 2,000 British parents to share their parenting style and how it compares to the parents. The results showed some significant modifications in our attitude toward parenting a family:
Top 5 Differences in Parenting
Modern parents are more flexible. According to our study, more than fifty percent (52 percent) of all parents (52 percent) nowadays have few or no guidelines for their kids. However, two-thirds of the people surveyed said they were given clear and strict rules set by their parents as they were growing older (66 percent).).
Modern parents are more hands in the game. Our research has shown that today’s parents tend to spend more time together with their kids daily. For instance, they’re more likely to cook or bake with their children (66 percent) or make crafts and arts in their homes (61 percent) or engage in creative games such as shopping or even with teachers (61 percent).
Parents of today prioritize spending more time with their families. Based on our research findings, spending time with the whole family is essential for modern parents. Current parents are more insistent on activities for the family (63 percent) and also take their kids out on weekends (63 rates) and during holidays in more significant numbers (46 percent) than their parents did.
The previous generation was more pragmatic. While modern parents adopt a more relaxed approach, we observed that the older generations were more focused on imparting the practical skills of life to their kids. For instance, they taught their children to use a bicycle (54 percent) and repair damaged clothes (43 percent).
Modern parents are more prone to feeling guilt. One explanation for this shift in priorities to the quality of time rather than teaching practical skills is that current parents are more prone to feeling shame. Our research suggests that 3 out of 5 (61 percent) parents of today believe they are under more pressure of being a great mother than parents of their generation did. In addition, more than fifty percent (55 percent) believe they are more guilty than their parents for letting their children miss out on a portion of their kids’ lives because of their work obligations.
We know the parents’ schedules are more hectic than ever as they must balance work, family, and the demands of modern-day life. We believe family life should be as simple as possible to ensure families can spend more time together doing the things they love most instead of worrying about minor things.
