Sea Life Water Play
The best resource we have bought this year has to be this Flisat table from Ikea. Having the trays ready and waiting makes it so easy to set up fantastic invitations to play and beautiful small worlds. This Sea Life Water Play took less than 5 minutes to set up and lasted for an entire afternoon of play.
The children adored swimming the animals through the water and exploring the shells. They particularly enjoyed the challenge of using the shells to transfer water from one container to another (they also used them as cups!)
The set up was very simple, 1 tray with water coloured blue with food dye, 1 tray with shells and 1 tray with sea animals. We bought a bag of shells from Educational Experience but you could of course collect your own, especially if you live closer to the beach!
Early Years Learning Framework
Outcome 4 - Children are confident and involved learners
4.4. Children resource their own learning through connecting with people, place, technologies and natural and processed materials.
This Activity is for:
Toddlers an Preschoolers (ensure there are no choking hazards for children under 3)
Children who are showing interest in shells, animals or the beach/ocean
Encourage children to:
Describe with their senses - what can they see and feel, smell and hear
Use their imagination with the animals
Scoop water with shells
Share what they know about shells and sea animals
Extend on this by:
Adding sand with the water to create a beach
Having beach, ocean and shell related books in a reading area
Simplify this by:
Taking away either the shells or the animals to leave just one element with the water
