Pom Poms - A Simple Invitation to Play

A simple invitation to play is a great play experience in my opinion! I strongly believe that no activity should take longer to set up than it will be used and I do pretty well to stick by that. That belief came about when I read that the French believe that no food should take longer to cook than it will take to eat (ie, food that takes a long time to cook should be enjoyed over a long meal with friends or family). While I still don’t have the food one mastered, Im happy to say I’m pretty spot on for play experiences!

This pom pom play experience was very easy to create. I simply tipped out our bag of pom poms into the containers and added bits from our play kitchen - some bowls, tongs and other scooping devices. The children then added more as they started to play.

Some of them colour sorted while others filled bowls up as fast as they could. Importantly (and the secret mission for this experience) was that they all used the tools which through play helped them to develop their fine motor skills, coordination and hand strength!

This Activity is for:

  • Children who are no longer putting objects in their mouths. You know your children best and need to use your judgment on whether they are ready to play with pom poms or not.

Encourage children to:

  • Use the tools available to scoop, transfer, pick up and transfer the pom poms

Extend on this by:

  • Encouraging sorting by colour or size if they are showing interest

  • Putting out only tong type tools to engage more complex fine motor skills

Simplify this by:

  • Only putting bowls out with the pom poms to encourage the use of the pincer grip
